When you feel the feeling of unity in a performance or you watch someone who was hated rise to the top because of her secret talent that she had been hiding her whole life, an emotion stirs inside of you that you wish you could feel all the time. Something so warm. Something that pulls you away from the reality of life—the mundane day-to-day living. It takes you into something like a dream world you wish you could be part of all the time.
We are all meant to live like that. We are the most amazing things on this earth. People are intricate and brilliant and beautiful. There’s no denying that. But it’s in the simplest moments and the moments when the world pauses for just a slight second that the beauty starts to rise to the surface. Where has that been? Where is it now? Or rather, where is it going? Our world has been thrown into confusion. And now we’re beginning to collectively despise those simple moments where to stop to realize just how amazing people are and how we were created for intimacy every day of our waking lives. We were created to feel. The question is where does the feeling come from? If we all lived on the premise “we were created to feel.” Then everyone would just wait until they experienced their first feeling and follow that feeling until their last breath or until it began to disappoint them or until another feeling began to drag them a different way. But that’s the problem. We were created to feel but we have grossly been separated from the thing we must understand before we just start feeling ourselves into emptiness and broken relationships. When we understand who created us to feel then we can understand what needs to happen before we begin to throw our feelings out into the nearest thing that makes us warm and fuzzy inside. The feeling isn’t the guide to how we should feel. We must know if there’s water below and how deep the water is before we jump off the cliff. We must know the feeling and whether it was really meant for us or not to know whether it will bring us satisfaction and allow us to live the way we were designed to live. One day a man came to the realization he needed somewhere to store his very special watch his grandfather gave him. Growing up knowing how to woodwork, he began to carefully cut out the wood he needed to make his special box. He worked hours and hours making this box perfect. Lining the bottom with cushion so the watch would stay as safe as possible. He was finally finished. What will he do after he is done? Will he store water in there ruining the material he carefully formed together? Only a fool would do that. The obvious answer is that he would store his grandfather’s watch in there—what he purposed to do when he got the idea to make the box in the first place. When we understand that God created us, then we know that, because He created us, we each have a specific purpose that was in God’s mind when He was working to form us. Birth is a miracle. And it says in Psalm 139:16, “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Not only do we have a specific design and are we special to God, but we have a PURPOSE. God made us to feel a certain way and be in community a certain way. Like the man’s watch, God has gifted us with something special that we store in our bodies. His word says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”(2 Corinthians 6:19-20) If we accept His gift of grace and forgiveness and live for Him, our own bodies have the purpose of storing the thing that is most precious to our Designer. So once we understand we have been created we can start to understand all other outlets of life. We were created to feel but we must see that we were created to feel according to how our Creator designed us to feel. And only in that way of feeling are we most satisfied, completed, and fulfilled. You can try everything else like I did before the Lord gave me the gift of His overwhelming presence and before my life became completely His. But I will help you out and tell you right now that no worldly relationship, alcohol, smoking, or pornography will get you the feeling you’re searching for. The feeling we want and desire that’s at the core of every human being, is intimacy with the One who created you and living in the purpose He designed you to carry out. It’s only then that you can jump on board with the feeling you were created to feel and it’s only then you will understand that’s the very thing you’ve been looking for this entire time.
